Southern US Style Vegan Steak


  • 1 cup chickpeas, cooked and mashed
  • 1 cup tempeh, grated
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth


  1. In a large bowl, combine mashed chickpeas, grated tempeh, onion, garlic, smoked paprika, thyme, black pepper, salt, and soy sauce. Mix well.
  2. Gradually add breadcrumbs and vegetable broth to the mixture, stirring until the mixture is firm enough to form into steaks.
  3. Shape the mixture into steak-sized patties.
  4. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the steaks for 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Serve hot with your choice of side dishes
